Space, the final frontier. Living things were never meant to exist out here, where vacuum death awaits outside the thin metal walls of orbital bases and fragile shuttle craft. Several orbital colonies orbit around the Earth, and many different mining colonies have left the orbit of Earth to explore into the solar system and beyond. After the bomb, many of these colonies lost their docking station on Earth and were forced to crash-land back.
Many of these mining colonies make amazing profits, mining asteroids and bringing the material back to Earth to use in various engineering, mechanical, and electrical disciplines. After the bomb, many areas of Earth became irradiated or completely devastated. This meant one of the few places left to find materials was outside of Earth, which led to amazing progress in rocket and space-craft sciences.
Not all spacecrafts are built the same, some larger colonies have the resources to create and maintain larger and well-constructed crafts. On the other hand, due to the increase of spacecraft related technology, it is possible for more hand-crafted spacecrafts to be made by individuals with the engineering know-how and grit. Space pirates have taken advantage of this, and often will harass and pillage mining ships returning to Earth to bring new materials.
These colonies have no idea what happened on Earth, and have been entirely cut off on communications and continue to live with what resources they have. Many of these spacecraft had emergency reserves, ways of producing oxygen, and are able to last for a long in Earth's orbit.
Mining asteroids and other nearby planets, harvesting resources like gas, metals, and different rare minerals. They can make a large profit from getting these materials and bringing them back to Earth. They are equipped with heavy-powered satellites that allow them to communicate back with Earth, often times being controlled by a commander. They have to deal with Space Pirates that will try to pillage their ships, and destroy them if they do not cooperate.
After the bomb, even after all the oceans became largely polluted with nuclear waste and toxic runoff, the pirates never stopped. Some of them, took off to space in handmade craft with whatever weaponry they could find or rig onto their ships. This is the mining colonies worst nightmare, and they have to be equipped to handle these situations by any means necessary.
Although corporations have not been as common after the bomb, with many of them forcing to go under or use what resources they still had to build large bunkers, some corporations still navigate the solar system and do various sciences and mining. They maintain satellite grids, map the solar system for rare resources, and do research on other planets and asteroids.
Different groups, whether independent or contracted, may go out to space for various missions. Some black-hat, some completely legal. Whether it be just going out to space to explore, steal equipment, or destroy satellites, there are no longer restrictions on who can go out into space. With spacecrafts being cheaper and more readily available than ever in history, it is not uncommon for smaller groups to take to space. Some of these groups might be super rich, enjoying a spacecraft type yacht where all they do is party in space, away from the depressing reality of Earth after the bomb.
