+Whatever other organisation they're currently fighting against should be actively tunnelling into the rat folk city. the rats should not notice this, but maybe passive hearing checks for tunneling noises. since the routes are also actively unneling things to expand their city, maybe these noises can be heard in many different places and using this way to figure out the plot would involve hearing noises in an are that you shouldn't. this may be too esoteric of away to figure it out, but it is only one of many.
